A little bit about Deb
I have always been drawn to art, and after finishing school, I pursued my passion by studying fine arts at university. My journey began in Darwin, where I spent two years immersed in drawing and printmaking. The printmaking studio was a vibrant and inspiring space, particularly because of the strong presence of Aboriginal artists. Their deep connection to the land and culture, expressed through textural basket weaving and environmental influences in their printmaking, left a lasting impression on me.
I then completed my final year at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba, shifting my focus to textiles and printmaking. This period deepened my interest in women’s contributions to art history, particularly the intersection of craft and fine art. I explored traditional sewing techniques and incorporated them into my work, creating intricate machine embroidery on paper in soft, tonal creams and whites.
After university, I returned home to Narrabri, where I faced the challenge of staying connected to the art world in such a remote region. Without social media, finding opportunities for artistic engagement felt difficult, and I often worked in isolation. The landscape of the art world has changed dramatically since then—social media has opened up endless possibilities for connection, exposure, and collaboration, allowing regional artists like myself to share our work far beyond our immediate communities.
